Preceptorship in Primary Care

GP Assistant (GPA)

GPA Preceptorship on an Accredited Training Scheme

What preceptorship means for your role

Preceptorship means that I have a mentor who I see regularly to discuss my learning and development needs.  Someone is looking at what I am doing and ensures that I meet the required standards of practice.  My progress is being checked including that I am submitting evidence of my learning.  All staff at my practice support me in my development and if I have any concerns I inform my mentor.  As I gain evidence for my GPA portfolio, my mentor must be satisfied that I have met the competency requirements before they sign to confirm that.

Examples of best practice for your role

I adhere to established good practice including:

  • Recognise and escalate patient concerns to relevant staff as necessary.
  • Be aware of my own boundaries and what to do when they are reached.

Resources and examples of preceptorship relating to your role

Outside of the practice there is compulsory training from my local Training Hub to teach clinical competencies plus quarterly meetings with my local Professional Network.

Any related frameworks

The national Health Education England (HEE) competency framework for GPAs covers the core competencies expected of the GPA role.
